Radical Fitness
Our obsession with how we look is only getting worse. The popularity of social media gives us all this ‘rockstar’ appearance exacerbating the need to fit in. Fitness gains are most frequently posted as getting leaner, more ripped, sports model bodies, and less frequently about how we feel, what we can do, and how that applies to our lives on a daily basis.
Radical fitness is not about 6 pack abs or extreme diets. It is about functional fitness, goal setting, and creating a body that feels great and can do things that serve our lifestyles.
Fitness definition
- the condition of being physically fit and healthy
- the quality of being suitable to fulfill a particular role or task
A ‘fit’ body can look so many different ways. Wasting our time trying to conform to society’s image of fitness will not lead us to happiness. Instead let’s spend our time working on feeling better in a body that can do stuff like get up off the floor, climb on things, dance, pick up children (or adults), hike in the mountains, go upside down, or even do circus tricks!
#1 thing in Radical Fitness – Goals
Many modern day fitness techniques can and will help us to achieve our personal goals. The main questions are:
- What are YOUR goals and why?
- Which techniques will best serve you to reach YOUR goals?
Don’t have goals? I can help you make some. I feel that goals are a great way to achieve healthy change. Without goals we can become lost and confused of what to do each day, and it is much easier to fall back into old habits that don’t serve us. Goals give us purpose and help us motivate as well as help direct our choices.
Your goals might be any of these:
General Goals
Specific Goals
- have more energy
- have a pain free body
- lose weight
- gain strength
- become more flexible / mobile
- feel strong and empowered in my body
- dance with confidence
- feel stronger in my core
- know my own limits (and maybe push them)
- do pull ups or climb a rope
- touch your toes
- do a handstand or cartwheel
- run a marathon
- heal an injury
- do straddle inversions with straight arms
- get up off the floor easily
- walk on uneven surfaces without knee pain
- be able to climb out of a burning building
- walk down the street feeling confident and capable
Is your goal on this list? If not, perhaps this list gives you more clarity about what your goal(s) is/are. If you are still stumped, start with a general goal. We can get specific later.
